Inventor of the railway fishplate.
Agrippa, Marcus Vipsanius (63-12BC)
From 34BC he was in charge of Roman aqueducts. He also built the Roman
Pantheon in 27 BC and the Pont du Gard, a high level aqueduct which
brough water to Nimes, in 18BC.
Armstrong, William George, Lord (1810-1900)
A specialist in power hydraulic , who built possibly the first
hydraulic accumulator in 1851, founder of the firm of Sir W.G. Armstrong
Whitworth & Co.
Arnodin ,Ferdinand-Joseph (1845-1924)
French civil engineer, pupil of Marc Seguin and heir to his firm. He
designed many bridges carried on steel-wire ropes, including probably
the first transporter bridges, His first was in northern Spain at
Portugalete, near Bilbao over the River Nervion, of 160m(525ft) span. He
built others at Bizerta(Tunis) , Rouen(the first in France), Bordeaux,
Marseille (1905) and Rochefort. His ropes with alternate layers twisting
in opposite directions may have been the origin of locked-coil ropes.
Arup, Ove nyquist (1895-1988)
Founder of Ove Arup & Partners and of Arup Associates, probably
the largest consulting practice in the western world has responsible
for Sydney Opera House and much else.
Aspdin, Joseph(1799-1855)
Patented Portland cement in 1824, the year when Vicat in France was already building his first bridge with a hydraulic cement.
